Birley Bakery brings the Christmas tradition to Burlington Arcade, in the heart of London

The British firm is expanding its presence in the capital with a pop-up shop in Mayfair dedicated to artisanal chocolate, patisserie and Christmas gifts

The British firm Birley Bakery has opened a pop-up shop in Burlington Arcade, one of London’s most iconic shopping arcades, situated in the exclusive neighbourhood of Mayfair. Open since 2 November, the shop is dedicated to its Christmas collection and is the brand’s third outlet in the British capital, alongside Birley Bakery and Birley Chocolate, both located on Chelsea Green.

Covering an area of just 15 square metres, the new boutique features a design inspired by 19th-century Japonism. Its walls are decorated with illustrations of birds taking part in a hot chocolate ceremony, accompanied by ornamental motifs that evoke craftsmanship and attention to detail. The space blends into the historic setting of Burlington Arcade, which opened in 1819; a shopping arcade that retains its links to jewellery, watchmaking and luxury brands, as well as traditions such as the presence of the Beadles, its distinctive guardians.

The collection brings together some of Birley Bakery’s most iconic specialities, with chocolate taking centre stage. Highlights include handcrafted white and milk chocolate figures, chocolate Christmas trees and Advent calendars – available in classic and deluxe versions, each featuring 24 individually handcrafted treats. The selection also includes traditional British sweets, such as mince pies and Christmas cake.

Panettone takes centre stage in this season’s range, with classic and triple-chocolate varieties, as well as the return of the panettone produced in collaboration with the Scottish distillery The Macallan, now in its second consecutive year. As a new addition, the brand is introducing a cinnamon and caramel recipe that combines candied orange, light chocolate flavoured with Ceylon cinnamon and a spiced glaze, alongside subtle touches of almond paste.

The shopping experience is rounded off with a selection of customisable Christmas hampers, allowing customers to mix and match chocolates, coated nuts, marrons glacés and other house specialities. A range of hot chocolate to take away has also been introduced, available in three varieties: 70 per cent dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate.

In addition, the firm has introduced a service aimed at guests staying at nearby hotels in Mayfair, who will be able to order its products via the concierge and have them delivered directly to their rooms – an initiative that links the gastronomic offering with the area’s luxury hotels.

Founded by British entrepreneur Robin Birley, the brand takes its inspiration from traditional French boulangeries-pâtisseries. Under the direction of master pastry chef Vincent Zanardi, it offers a range based on classic recipes reinterpreted using contemporary techniques and a careful selection of ingredients, including flour from Burgundy, Guérande sea salt and almonds from Valencia.
