The Macallan expands its annual A Night on Earth series with the launch of The First Light, a limited edition designed to celebrate the arrival of the New Year from a global perspective. On this occasion, the firm focuses on New Zealand, one of the first countries to welcome the new dawn, as a symbol of renewal, hope and shared celebration.
This fourth instalment in the collection is presented as a single malt Scotch whisky made from a combination of American and European oak casks seasoned with sherry, complemented by a moderate introduction of American oak casks that previously contained bourbon. The result is a balanced aromatic and flavour profile, with notes of red fruit compote, toasted marshmallows, vanilla and a subtle hint of Manuka honey, an iconic ingredient from New Zealand, along with a sweet, spicy and toasted oak finish.
Beyond the liquid itself, the launch stands out for its artistic approach. The packaging design was created in collaboration with New Zealand artist Bonnie Brown, whose illustrations evoke scenes typical of the southern summer—bonfires on the beach, coastal barbecues and pōhutukawa flowers—and unfold in three narrative moments: sunset, celebration and first light. A visual interpretation that connects the craftsmanship of whisky with nature and the festive rhythm of the southern hemisphere.
According to Russell Greig, the distillery’s Whisky Maker, this edition ‘explores the cultural symbolism of light and its sensory warmth’, maintaining an unmistakably Scottish character, but incorporating an antipodean narrative that is expressed in its fruity and spicy profile. The production process follows the firm’s usual standards, with exhaustive quality control on each cask, reflecting The Macallan’s comprehensive approach throughout its production process.
A Night on Earth: The First Light has been available since December 2025 at selected retailers and on the brand’s online platform, with a recommended retail price of €124. It is designed for luxury consumers who seek not only oenological excellence, but also a contemporary narrative to accompany moments of celebration and transition to a new cycle.
