Located in the heart of San Sebastian, in the shadow of the majestic Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, the Cortázar restaurant awaits us. A charming gastronomic space that seems to have escaped from a Belle Époque novel to find its place in the 21st century. As soon as we cross its threshold, we are intoxicated by a classic and sober setting, but with a contemporary soul, which has been designed by the renowned Lázaro Rosa-Violán studio. A meticulous interior design project that pays a beautiful tribute to the past with a contemporary vision. Dark oak wood panels, strategically placed mirrors and lighting that caresses every corner, creating a warm and sophisticated atmosphere that is extremely welcoming, so that as soon as you arrive at the restaurant you feel at home, before starting to enjoy the delicacies that come out of its magnificent cuisine.
The Cortázar restaurant is divided into several clearly differentiated atmospheres. Three spaces within the same premises that make it a very versatile restaurant that is perfect for any occasion. From lively meals with friends, to intimate family moments around a table, to intimate dinners or fun evenings at night where there is always a lively DJ.
Cortázar’s gastronomic proposal combines the genuine Basque gastronomic tradition with the right touches of Mediterranean cuisine. Its menu is a true declaration of intentions, characterised by a genuine love of the product and of detail, where quality and honesty always come first. A magnificent destination for lovers of good food, which we can enjoy at any time of the day thanks to its uninterrupted cuisine. Moreover, its magnificent location in the heart of San Sebastian makes it a must for tourists and locals alike. A formidable meeting point where good times are always guaranteed.
Our evening at Cortázar began with some eye-catching tiger prawns in panko tempura with cabbage, kimchi sauce and pickled onion, which come in sam sam format. A recipe bursting with flavour and exoticism, it was the perfect starter before moving on to an exquisite homemade foie gras with Espelette peppers and flame-grilled piquillo peppers on brioche toast. Creamy and delicate, we loved the combination with the sweet and crunchy touch of the delicious brioche toast.
We continued with an impressive fried octopus in chickpea flour with wrinkled potatoes and paprika foam from La Vera, which we found to be a real spectacle. A sublime combination of flavours and textures, which made us thoroughly enjoy the dish before going on to try one of their famous rice dishes. In this case, we opted for the mellow rice with prawns, which surprised us with the perfect point of the grain and its resounding taste of the sea. A delicacy that culminated in the sweet moment of dessert, which took the form of an irresistible homemade custard with whipped cream and truffle, and a sensational creamy Baileys that became the perfect finishing touch.
Cortázar is much more than a beautiful restaurant in the heart of San Sebastian. A magnificent meeting point between history and the present, where the art of good food is combined with careful design to offer something unique in San Sebastian, because in this charming restaurant, every dish is a story, every corner a postcard and every visit an unforgettable memory. Cortázar awaits you!
