Artika Books presents “Capturing the Soul,” an artist’s book featuring 40 original photographs by Steve McCurry

Forty years ago, Steve McCurry captured the iconic photograph of a refugee girl in Afghanistan, which soon became the cover of National Geographic

Capturing the Soul” is a numbered and limited edition of 2,998 copies, all signed by the artist, conceived as a tribute to that penetrating gaze of green eyes.

McCurry has selected each of the 40 snapshots, searching for his most representative works, to create something unparalleled with this exclusive edition: a unique artist’s book.

The work is presented in a case featuring the image of the Afghan Girl, revealing the two volumes of the piece: the Art Book, which contains the 40 original photographs accompanied by a phrase specifically written by McCurry for each, reflecting on his more than 40 years of experience and every moment captured by his camera. In the Study Book, we find insights from some of the most authoritative voices regarding the figure and career of this genius of photography.

The image of the Afghan Girl opens the doors to the essence of McCurry, presented in a case of unmatched brilliance. This portrait marks 40 years of history in 2024, as it was in 1984 that McCurry discovered Sharbat Gula, the name of the Girl, amidst the war in Afghanistan when she was only 12 years old.

In this edition, McCurry documents his vision of the world he inhabits, captivating viewers not only through the beauty of his work but also through his profound and personal way of evoking emotions.

Through 40 original photographs, personally selected by the artist, dating from 1984 to 2019, we find 29 horizontal images and 11 vertical ones, printed on the highest quality photographic paper. These images traverse 19 countries, filled with culture, emotion, and colour. Featuring Durst laser printing on Fuji Crystal Archive paper with a matte finish and protected by translucent Fedrigoni paper, this Art Book solidifies its status as an essential piece for photography enthusiasts.

Steve McCurry stands out as the undeniable protagonist of this work, which not only includes his most emblematic photographs but also offers a journey through his personal life. Bonnie McCurry, his sister, provides a chronological reflection on his career through the images, while journalist Antoni Ortí examines his professional side, highlighting his techniques and artistic references.

McCurry analyses each of the 40 photographs, sharing anecdotes that reveal his sensitivity and the context in which they were taken. This limited, numbered, and signed edition is the result of a creative process in which McCurry has been deeply involved, from selecting images to overseeing colour proofs. His complete involvement is underscored by his signature on all 2,998 copies of this edition.
