His international PET Lamp project, created in 2011, transforms plastic waste into handcrafted pieces made by local communities in countries such as Colombia, Chile, Australia and Rwanda, combining ancestral techniques with contemporary design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, Catal\u00e1n de Oc\u00f3n is joining forces with IWC Schaffhausen for the Solidarity Xmas Tree 2025, to create a charity tree hand-woven by artisans in Rwanda, inspired by the watchmaker&#8217;s Ingenieur collection. This collaboration brings together luxury, craftsmanship and social commitment, and will be auctioned off to benefit foundations focused on education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below, we talk to the designer about his creative vision, his connection with IWC and his international work with artisan communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your career combines contemporary design, sustainability and craftsmanship. How did this approach to design come about and what role does it play in your work today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collaboration with artisans, rather than working with industry and self-production, arose spontaneously in response to a project that had to address plastic waste pollution in the Colombian Amazon. This led to the creation of PET Lamp, and being in an environment far removed from industrial processes and infrastructure that enable recycling, we decided to work with artisans and reuse rather than recycle. What personal and social lessons have you learned from working with groups such as the one in Rwanda?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are often questioned about why we go to produce in distant countries, especially those that are struggling or developing. It may seem that we are looking for cheap labour, but knowing the reality of the artisan communities we work with, one realises that we are reaching out to the best active artisans in the world, who keep an ancestral tradition alive that is generally in danger of disappearing. Through our work, we help to raise awareness and promote these techniques, providing alternative livelihoods for communities that would otherwise, as in the case of Rwanda, be engaged in agriculture. Artisans are the people who know their environment best, and having the opportunity to spend weeks and months with them and this project has helped us to delve into cultures and ways of understanding life so distant from our own that it would otherwise be impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The IWC solidarity tree is woven by Rwandan craftswomen and dialogues with the Ingenieur collection. How has this crossover between ancestral techniques, organic materials and watchmaking precision been articulated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the work behind a craft is not visible or appreciated at first glance. As much time is spent preparing the materials as is spent on the actual weaving. The same is true in watchmaking. There is what you see and appreciate at first glance on the outside of the watch, but the true value lies inside, in its mechanism and its extreme precision. The same is true of the technique we have used in the IWC Solidarity Xmas Tree. At first glance, it looks like a simple weave, but it is based on a design from the Ibisi culture and is made using delicate papyrus skin, applied millimetre by millimetre, dyed with soot mixed with banana flower sap. Underneath this skin is a bamboo structure that gives it shape and structure and hides a lighting system that shines light onto the star and the gifts contained in the basket\/plant pot.<br><br><strong>This collaboration focuses on community empowerment and education. Why is it important for design to contribute to social development, and how do you imagine these initiatives growing in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Craftsmanship is a skill that requires many hours of learning and is passed down from generation to generation, usually through mothers and grandmothers. It is typically practised at home and forms part of everyday family life. A small disruption in that balance and before you know it, it is lost. Not only is an ancestral technique that is very difficult to recover lost, but also a way of socialising and sharing knowledge between different generations, empowering women, helping the family economy and giving older people a place in a social group.
